Özet
Oral health education programs have great importance to improve the oral health of children and the primary school provides a unique setting for such programs. Therefore this study aimed to compare the effectiveness on dental healthcare knowledge and behavior changes of instructional video and leaflet dental health education materials for school-aged children. This study was carried out on 291 children who were randomly selected from 2nd class students of three different primary schools in Yenimahalle district, Ankara. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain information regarding oral health knowledge. All children were examined in the classroom and clinical data on dental and gingival health were collected by using DMFT/S-dmft/s, dental plaque and gingival indices. Then the children were divided into 3 groups and the first group was instructed with the leaflet material, the second group was instructed with the video material and no education was given to the third group (control group) during three months. The difference about oral health knowledge and dental and gingival health of children were evaluated after three months. Education groups, either with video or leaflet showed significant positive changes in tooth brushing habit and using toothpaste Moreover, their knowledge about benefits of fluoride, dental floss, healthy nutritional habits, and routine dental visits increased significantly. (p<0,05). Although dental plaque index decreased statistically in the all groups (p<0,05), there was no difference about the gingival index (p>0,05). Dental education methods were more effective in girls than boys as a whole, whereas instructional video material was more effective for boys than girls, leaflet education method is more effective in girls than boys. Also the instructional video method was found more effective than leaflet education method .In conclusion, education both with instructional video and leaflet is effective in increasing oral health knowledge of children.
