perspective. In accordance with this aim, 13 parents, who applied to Ankara Provincial Directorate of
Family and Social Policies to request institutional care for their children, were
interviewed in-depth by making useof the qualitative research methods. The subjects are

As a result of study, parental perspectives of parents are generally influenced by the
general view of gender in the society and these parents see themselves in
competent. It is concluded that parents see institutional care as a last result and they opt for institutional
care only at the point where they are unable to deal with problems anymore. Considering
the personal experiences of parents, each of them face their own particular problems,
however lack of social support they need for coping with these problems is a common
ground. Handing over the child to institutional care is perceived as loss by parents and
they experience grieve afterwards. It can also be seen that parents keep in touch with
children during institutional care and parents assign a major meaning to meetings with
their children. The interviewed parents plan their futures with focusing on their children.
It is understood that after handing overtheir children to institutional care, parents
generally continue to battle against problems they have been facing previously.
The expectations of the parents regarding the process before their children were taken
into institutional care appeared to overlap with their own life experiences: day and night
nursing homes, carer support, economic support, rent support. In terms of their
expectations throughout the institutional care process, it is seen that they require
assistance with their relationship with their children and they attach a lot of importance
to the educational skills, experience and communication skills of professionals.
Life experiences of parents, are tackled in multiple layers by using the ecosystem
approach.
