Abstract

In this study, the vocabulary consisting of archery terms and idioms in manuscripts written in Ottoman Turkish, which are considered under the title of kavsnâme in the literature is analyzed. First, a corpus of manuscripts covering the period between the 15th - 19th centuries was created. In this corpus, Umdetü'l-Mütenâsilîn, which is considered the first translated work, Bahtiyârzâde Risâlesi, which is accepted as the first copyrighted work, together with Telhîs-i Risâilâ't-ı Rumât, which is the most important work of the corpus in terms of its content, has been taken as a total of 33 manuscripts. The study consists of 5 chapters. In the first chapter, the terminology collected on arrow types, parts of the arrow and temren types is analyzed. In the second section, the terminology collected on types of bows, parts of the bow and types of bowstrings is analyzed. In the third section, archery accessories and related terminology are analyzed. In the fourth section, terminology and idioms related to arrow shooting are analyzed under separate subheadings. The fifth and last part consists of indexes of archery terms and idioms evaluated throughout the study, according to their concept areas. As a result of the study, data that will contribute to the historical terminology and idiomatic vocabulary of Turkish have been provided by analyzing manuscripts covering a period of approximately 5 centuries, and a large number of terms and idioms from the Ottoman Turkish phase have been included in the rich vocabulary of Turkish, which has interacted with many other languages and cultures throughout its history.
