In this thesis, the reading culture reflected in Turkish novels published between
1851 and 1900 was examined. Novels that are published consecutively in
newspapers and magazines and consist of complementary chapters are
excluded from this thesis. The focus of the thesis is why, how, when, where and
with whom books are read in novels. In the novels, the places where the reading
culture takes place and the functions of the reading actions of the novel
characters have been questioned. In order to provide a basis for the study,
information about the historical framework and academic sources of reading is
given in the "Introduction" section. In the first part, the traces of reading culture in
the Ottoman society in the 19th century are mentioned in the context of the first
printing houses, press, newspapers and magazines, literacy and education
reform, and traditional reading habits. In the second part, the reading places
reflected in the novels were determined. The third section is devoted to reader
types. From the perspective of romanticism and sociality, the book, the library,
the author, the place of reading, the reading habit, the reader's gender, age,
profession, education, family structure, purpose of reading, the pleasure he feels
from reading, the responsibilities he takes regarding reading, active, passive,
deep, superficial reading styles and the characteristics of the areas where the
reader performs the reading action were examined. Reading habits dating back
to before the printed culture, the frequency of reading a book, thought interactions
between readers, reading suggestions, the qualities of the first translations and
their effects on creating the reading culture, libraries, second-hand booksellers,
printing, manuscripts, poetry readings, reading women, young girls, men and
young people. His image has been scanned and examined in novels.
