Abstract

This thesis titled "Çaylak Newspaper: Translation, Index, Examination", this thesis aims to translate Çaylak, a humour newspaper published in 162 issues between 1876-1877, into Latin letters and to determine the topics covered within the framework of the humour understanding of the period. In the preface, the purpose, boundaries and methodology of the thesis are explained. In the introduction, the arrival of the printing press in the Ottoman Empire, the development of journalism, humour journalism and press censorship are explained. In the first chapter of the thesis, information about Mehmet Tevfik's life and journalism is given. In the second chapter, the structural features of Çaylak newspaper and Mehmet Tevfik's editorial policy are mentioned. In the third chapter, under the title of Political and Social Life in Çaylak, information is given about the political life of the period, European and alafranga life, the effect of Ramadan on society, the problems of Istanbul and the issues mentioned in the newspaper. In the fourth chapter, the economic life in the years when Çaylak was published is presented. The translation of the articles published in the newspaper Çaylak into Latin letters constitutes the fifth chapter and occupies the largest place in the thesis. The content of the articles here has been evaluated in the previous chapters of the thesis. The most important aspect of the thesis and its biggest contribution to the literature is that it contains a complete transcript of the newspaper Çaylak. In the appendices contains the systematic transcription of Çaylak newspaper in Excel file chronologically under the headings of author, publication date, type, article title, number and page range. This section is intended to serve as a resource for other researchers who will study other newspapers of the period. In the conclusion section, the role and importance of the newspaper in the 19th century is determined and a comprehensive evaluation is made.
