existence and continuously interacting with each other since the beginning of
humanity. When examining the historical perspective, we see that technology has
severely influenced space and still been continuing to do it. Surfaces are the
most-affected space within the context of technology. When examined, space
surfaces demonstrate us a lot of data including how, by what kind of technology
and when they were built. Space surfaces that have been directly influenced by
technology until today have undergone many changes and developments in
terms of quality. Particularly today, surfaces have gained the ability of interaction
under favor of digital revolution technology, which enables us to get ahold of
space surfaces.
Within the scope of the study;
In the first section, an introduction is presented in which information about the
research subject concerning to the study, the determination of problem and the
purpose, scope and method of the study is given.
The second section tells us that human started to generate spaces as a result of
the need and request of creating an area specific to him in nature because of
various reasons. In this regard; definitions of the concept “space”, evaluation of
spaces in terms of configuration process and declarations of interior-exterior
applications and so on are included.
In the third section where physical elements are examined defining spatial
vacuum that is often mentioned in every part of the statements concerning to the
concept “space”, descriptions regarding typology, position and tendency of boundaries namely space surfaces as well as components of space surface such
as material, color, texture, form…etc., as part of components making a place are
referred.
The forth section in which statements relating to the changes and developments
that space surface has undergone through historical process in consequence of
technological developments are included is discussed in three eras under the
titles of Pre-Industrial Revolution, Industrial Revolution and Digital Revolution.
For each era, conceptual statements are made as part of the study and the
technological developments by way of the surfaces of remarkable constructions
in that period are sketched in.
In the fifth section which is the main part of the study and the hypothesis is
supported in, an analysis is carried out by laying a bridge between digital
revolution technology and space surface. Beside this, interactive space surface
is defined by establishing relationship between space surface and statements
concerning to the concept “interaction” within the context of information
technology and interdisciplinary approach.
Following the determination of requirements of interactive space surface through
the established relationship, four titles are specified for interactive space surfaces
in line with the requirements; media surfaces, smart light surfaces, memory shape
surfaces, robotic surfaces. Patterns conforming to the requirements of interactive
space surface within the frame of these titles and corresponding to the statements
relating to the titles are examined with regards to the components of space
surface, the tables are created and the observations are made.
In the conclusion section, a suggestion indicating how to categorize the
contemporary reflections of technological developments on space surfaces within
the concepts which are dominant today is made in accordance with the inferences
and data. Acquirements of the categorization for interior architecture discipline
considering space surface components are declared, and predictions concerning the future reflections and their effects are made.
