Places carry various codes on memories, cultures, sense of belonging and self. Our experiences with space from childhood to adulthood are among the most important factors that shape our selves and our past. Space and background elements in children's picture books are two-dimensional reflections of what we perceive in the real world. Although the level of similarity between the real world and picture books vary according to genre, style and perceptual focus, picture books take their references from the real world. The way these references are handled plays a big role in the child's perceptual development.
Perception is a comprehensive subject of psychology, more specifically of cognitive psychology, which encompasses many different theories. This thesis aims to present the theoretical information that a children's book illustrator will need about the perception of space in a general framework and to convey the parts related to the creation of space as succinctly as possible. In the first chapter, a definition of children's picture books will be given and their historical development will be discussed focusing on the subject of space. In order to shed light on the situation in our country, the course of the development in Türkiye is given under a separate title.
In the second chapter, the child's perception of space will be emphasized. First of all, the concept of space will be defined and various perspectives will be presented. Then, spaces for children and how these spaces have undergone a transformation in recent years as well as their results will be analyzed. Thus, it is aimed to reveal how the space is defined by the child. In the second part of the second chapter; data on the development of space perception in children by age groups will be presented after briefly mentioning the concept and theories of perception.
In the third chapter, the subject of space perception in children's books will be discussed by the data provided in the second part. In this context, the space will first be studied as fiction and then its function in children's books will be shown. Later on, various rules will be determined based on the effects of design elements in children's picture books on the perception of space. Finally, three-dimensional movable books that offer new approaches to the perception of space in children's books will be included and unique examples for each will be examined.
In the fourth and last chapter, the picture book named “Carpet adventures of Beren and Mırmır”, prepared within the context of the application study of this thesis will be presented. The designed story which inspired by Turkish carpets and kilims, and stages of illustration will be examined in detail. Thus, it is aimed to present a study that will contribute to children's perception of space and their ability to construct space.
