Heinrich Neuhaus, Josef Hofmann, Josef Lhevinne, Karl Leimer-Walter Gieseking and Gyorgy Sandor made important contributions to art of piano playing by their performer and instructor identifications in twentieth century.
The following paper has four main chapters. First of all, information about the names mentioned is given. In the first main part, the method of the research is mentioned. In the second part, what the piano technique means for these authors is examined with their approaches to the solutions which they offered for certain problems also their working techniques, as well as their approach to pedal and fingering. In the third part, the points they attach importance to in piano education like the training of the ear, mental practice, self-control and self-hearing while playing, their teaching methods and experiences are expressed. In the fourth part, the similarities and differences on certain points in these approaches are analyzed.
In the final chapter, certain common and different points that will help pianists and piano instructors work are emphasized in the approaches included in the research. It is thought that the ideas, methods and perspectives in this research are important as a being a resource in terms of more efficient piano study, better piano performance and for improving piano education.
