ABSTRACT
In the historical buildings, which are restored with a new function day by day and extant, the access and visit of everyone to the building is still not fully ensured in the national and international arena. In recent years, limited architectural arrangements have been introduced to provide access for people with disabilities to some important historical structures in the world. However, it has been observed that the implementation can not meet the needs of individuals in different age and competence categories such as vision, hearing, physical and mental disability. Therefore, it is important to bring together two concepts with clear rules such as 'restoration' and 'universal design' on a common ground, ensure national and international accreditation, and determine contemporary restoration requirements with an inclusive design approach. The subject of inclusive design-based design is to offer spaces, products and services that appeal to as many people as possible, meet their needs equally, and are designed in an accessible and usable way age, education, language, gender, (physical) physical condition, all kinds of disability, economic and cultural differences, etc. regardless of circumstances.
Within the scope of this thesis, the Brewery Hammam built by Ernst Eğli in the 1930s for the Brewery workers in Atatürk Orman Çiftliği was chosen as an example. Considering the original function, historical and cultural value of the historical building, it was decided to reuse it as a contemporary art museum, and suggestions were made by preparing a restoration design project in line with an inclusive design.
Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to examine the accessibility of re-functionalized historical buildings in accordance with the inclusive design principle and to prepare restoration design projects, in particular, "Atatürk Orman Çiftliği Brewery Hammam", which was chosen as an example.
In accordance with this purpose, observation was used as a data collection tool by using qualitative research method in this study and a field research was conducted. In this context, first of all, a detailed literature review on restoration and universal design was made. Then, written sources about the historical structure of the Brewery Hammam located in the Atatürk Orman Çiftliği campus in Ankara were reached, and the field studies of the building were carried out; Data were collected for the building with photography, video recording, and presentation with a guide. In the light of the collected data, the original state of the historical building is architecturally; Its old function, plan and section drawings, original materials, spatial organization chart, historical and cultural features have been analyzed. With an inclusive design approach, a re-functioning model as a contemporary art museum was created, and restoration and solution suggestions were made.
As a result, although universal design or inclusive design issues have been among the topics that have been discussed frequently in recent years, it has been seen that the implementation made are insufficient and designs covering only a limited segment are realized. In the re-functioning of historical buildings, it was seen that restoration works were carried out by using the existing functions of the buildings. In this study, the inclusive design approach is important as it is an exemplary study that combines designability and re-functioning logic in a way that allows historical buildings to be used in different functions.
