In the research, it is aimed to evaluate the interaction of artificial intelligence and space design in today's design education. In this study, it is aimed to determine the opinions of the students who receive interior architecture and environmental design education on the integration of interior space design and artificial intelligence. In this context, the research problem of the study; “What are the opinions of the students studying interior architecture and environmental design on the integration of interior space design and artificial intelligence?” Sub-problems of the study; “What are the views of the students studying interior architecture and environmental design about form and functionality in the interior space?”, “What are the views of the students studying interior architecture and environmental design about artificial intelligence?”, “What are the views of the students studying interior architecture and environmental design about the relationship between interior space and artificial intelligence?”
The research was designed with a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. The sample of the research consisted of Hacettepe University, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design 2021-2022 academic year 4th grade students. In this context, the criteria in the research are; It has been determined as working with senior students who have a certain level of space perception, artificial intelligence awareness, space and environment relations and who will start their interior architecture career. Students were allowed to participate in the research within the framework of the principle of voluntariness. Opinion form was used as a data collection tool in the research. In the opinion form developed by the researcher, open-ended questions examining The awareness of the students studying interior architecture and environmental design about artificial intelligence and their views on the integration of interior design and artificial intelligence were included. questionnaire was designed as an open-ended form with 13 questions in order to evaluate the interaction of artificial intelligence and space design in today's design education through the opinions of the participants. Content analysis was carried out by evaluating the data obtained as a result of the survey conducted to evaluate the interaction of artificial intelligence and space design in today's design education by means of the participants' opinions. After this content analysis, the data were divided into themes and categories.
In the study, the findings related to the interior were examined in two main themes; form in the interior space and functionality in the interior scape. Form in the interior space; interior design, user-oriented design, and interior space and its relation with form categories, while the theme of functionality in the interior space examined under the category of; functional approaches in interior space. Findings related to artificial intelligence were examined in one main theme; artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence were examined under the categories of; time-saving new age system, robot technology, creativity in art, technology of the future, decreasing manpower, industrial development, design programs, virtual reality, artificial intelligence in interior architecture education. Findings related to interior space and artificial intelligence were analyzed in one main theme; relationship between interior space and artificial artificial intelligence. Relationship between interior space and artificial intelligence were examined under the categories of; smart homes, product designs, energy saving, user-oriented design, artificial life.
As a result of the study, it has been determined that the 4th grade students studying interior architecture and environmental design have an awareness of the evolution of human beings and artificial intelligence, the use of which is growing over time in every field today. As a result of the data obtained, it has been observed that they are open to development and change and at the same time they are curious about the subject. However, it has been reached that students should be provided with more information about artificial intelligence directly in order to follow the realities of our age more closely, and artificial intelligence should be directly included in interior architecture education in line with the answers and expectations. With the awareness that technology is not far from design, they are expected to think together in the design process. It is recommended to diversify the studies on artificial intelligence in interior architecture and environmental design education, where artificial intelligence applications are tried in the interior, the effects on people and the environment are investigated, economic and sustainable outputs are included. In addition, it is predicted that multidisciplinary awareness will contribute to development in the globalizing world.
