The aim of this study is to determine the place of the Turkey-addressed information science articles in terms of the citations they receive. The data evaluated within the scope of the study were obtained from Web of Science, which is an international database. In this context, bibliographic data of all Turkey-addressed information science articles indexed from 1974, the year they were first published in the journals covered by Web of Science, to 2020 and of all other articles published in the relevant field in the same issue of the same journal were obtained. Afterwards, the citation performance of each Turkey-addressed information science article in the related issue of the journal was examined and the median value was determined. These articles were analyzed under the titles such as the number of citations, national and international collaboration, multiple authorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and also analyzed within the scope of the peer article citation impact. The peer article citation impact was conceptually discussed for the first time in this study. This metric makes it possible to see the position of each article in terms of citations among other articles in the relevant issue of the journal in which it was published, and to make a comment about its effectiveness by comparing it with its peers. In this way, it is possible to detect whether an article is cited high or low compared to its peers published in the same issue.
According to research findings, it is essential to increase the significance granted to multiple authorship, national and international collaboration in Turkey-addressed information science articles. The scientific meetings (symposiums, conferences, etc.) to be held in cooperation with institutions or universities will pave the way for joint authorship. Furthermore, it has been understood that the contribution of researchers with the information science background to the literature, as defined in this study, is as important as the contributions of researchers from outside the field. It is thought that bringing these researchers to the fore will contribute to increasing the quality and visibility of the Turkey-address information science articles. In order to encourage qualified scientific publications, it is recommended to benefit from the peer article citation impact, which is considered as a supportive tool for the journal impact factor-centered and currently used research evaluation and measurement mechanisms. Nevertheless, the limitations of scientific communication process and metrics should not be overlooked in all applications.
