In the 21st century, university campuses become places where not only people come together for academic education purposes but also students and academicians with different social and cultural backgrounds meet their physiological and social needs.
University campuses, which first defined as a city; recreation areas (sports facilities, dining halls, auditorium, etc.), academic buildings (classrooms, library, etc.), accommodation units (dormitories, guesthouses, and lodgings), and the transportation network between these units, contains many fields which meet different requirements and worth researching.
University campuses consist of structures that have been developing and growing since the design process. The growth of buildings on campuses over time and their ability to maintain their functional dynamics are thanks to the right expansion decisions taken during the design process of the campus. Istanbul Technical University Ayazağa Campus and 75. Yıl Student Social Center Dining Hall located on the same campus, which are examples of these expansion decisions on dining halls, were selected for the field study of this research.
Within the scope of this study, the design requirements of dining halls, which constitute a significant part of the recreation areas on university campuses, were examined through the possible effects on the environment and user behavior based on design, functionality, and the location on the campus.
In the first stage of the field study, the layout of the campus was analyzed according to the functions of the campus structures, and the physical structure of the campus was examined. In the following sections, campus planning, and food and beverage areas were evaluated based on the dining halls; criticized in terms of design and function, and effective use requirements were determined.
With the achieved outputs of the research, the possible usage versions of the campus and the units in it, particularly dining halls, have been researched on universities with campuses for design and development outputs and suggestions have been presented to shed light on future studies.
