Radiology is a branch of science that uses imaging in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up processes of diseases and traumas. Radiologists are trained to use and interpret all diagnostic imaging modalities. The new modalities that have started to be used with technological developments have led to an expansion in the field of radiology responsibility. It is controversial whether imaging methods or organ-based systems should be taken as a basis in the structuring of radiology specialty training programs. The aim of this thesis study is examining and determining the advantages and disadvantages of two specialization programs (namely organ system-based and modality-based). The research is a descriptive study. In our study, we contacted 28 radiology units to collect information and opinions about rotation patterns and their underlying factors. While 25 out of 28 faculties have an organ system-based rotation order, 3 of them execute their programs based on imaging methods. The 2 most important factors that influence the rotation patterns were determined as the number of research assistants and faculty members. The advantages of the programs based on organ system radiology are that they can provide a higher quality resident training, offer a focused education with defined scope and boundaries, include a more systematic theoretical study plan, and provide algorithmic and detailed learning using all modalities about the relevant system. While no significant advantage is reported in imaging-based programs, the most reported disadvantages are inability to think in harmony with other examinations, lack of system-based training, inability to complete organ-based body systematic training, and insufficient practice for each system.
