Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the experiences and views of mothers and fathers who have a baby between 6-36 months old on their children books' developmental side. The research was designed with a basic interpretative method which is one of the qualitative research methods. The sample of this research included 10 mothers and 2 fathers who had a baby between 6-36 months old. The data was collected by using a "semi-structured interview" which was prepared with the opinion of experts and "General Information Form". After the analysis of data, the themes of "Relationship with a Book", "The Selection of a Book" and "Book Reading Practices" were generated. Data were also interpreted in detail by being divided into categories and sub-categories to investigate selected themes thoroughly. Results of the research stated that, in their relationship with a book, parents perceive the positioning of the books as a part of the daily flow but books did not have any physical area in their home environment. Moreover, they regarded books as gifts that are limited to special days in their lives, their age to start reading a book was one year old at the latest, and their book-reading habits were limited. It has been observed that parents experience similar processes in book selection. When parents' book-reading practices were examined, their book-reading practices were limited to the reading time, it was described only as 'reading' instead of 'reading together', the preferred books were shaped according to their physical and content characteristics, they associate the obstacles to reading with the attention span of the child, that there was a parallelity between the person who read and the caregiver, and parents' occupations were a specific demographic that shape reading in children.
