Kitap Kapağı Tasarımlarında Harfleme Uygulamalarının Okunurluk Açısından İncelenmesi
Özet
Book covers have survived to the present day by showing various differences in their functions since the first time they were used. Covers and bindings, which were first produced to protect and keep the pages of the book together, are now used not only for the task of protection, but also for visually conveying the necessary information about the book. This information given by the cover design is not only the name of the book and the author, but also the subject, genre and idea of the book. While communicating this information, interesting and creative graphic design applications are also need to be created. Because the book, which has now become a consumption object, have to appeal to the consumer and sell. Today, cover designs have been developed based on such concerns and have shown many experimental designs. One of these experimental designs is the lettering used on the book covers.
Lettering is generally considered as typographic designs created manually or digitally without being bound to a typeface. Unlike an ordinary typeface design, these works are more experimental and will highlight the visuality. Combining typography and illustration, these designs are also preferred for book covers due to their versatile use. However, in these design-oriented applications, legibility problems have been observed in the basic informations such as the book and author's name. While continuing these experimental studies, questions such as whether legibility can be preserved began to arise in the designers minds.
In this study, named " Examining The Legibility of Lettering in Book Cover Designs ", this question that occurred in the minds of designers was tried to be answered. By answering questions such as what is important for creating a highly legible typeface and how letter forms should be drawn, the results were evaluated through lettering designs. In addition, the general logic of cover designs was established by answering questions such as what is a book and how and why cover designs are made. Finally, by combining these two results, efforts were made to produce legible lettering designs and also a successful book series design. At the end of the study, it is discussed whether such a design can be achieved with the difficulties experienced in this way and the solutions to these difficulties.
