PREMALİGN VE MALİGN LARİNKS LEZYONLARINDA TANISAL FIRÇA SİTOLOJİSİNİN ROLÜ
Özet
Laryngeal cancer is an important cancer subtype for Head and Neck Surgeons. It is the most common head&neck cancer subtype in Turkey. With increasing incidence in the last 10 years, it is now one of the most common cancer subtypes in the world. When detected and treated early, the laryngeal cancer can be curable. Thus, early diagnosis and fast and efficient treatment planning is pivotal for Head and Neck Surgeons. CD44 is a transmembrane cellular receptor protein which has glycoprotein structure. It has been regarded in many studies as an indicator of tumor stem cells and has been associated with tumor growth and metastasis. The aim of our study is to compare the diagnostic efficiency of CD44 augmented brush cytology and generic laryngeal biopsy. To that aim, the laryngeal brush cytology was obtained from the patients prior to the planned biopsy. Cytomorphologic analysis and CD44 staining has been performed in the brush cytology specimens. The statistical analysis showed that the diagnostic efficacy of the cytomorphologic examination improves with the addition of CD44 staining. The procedure for obtaining the brush cytology is fast and safe, therefore it is possible that it can be performed in the office setting. Because of the relatively high false-negative rate, it’s use in the screening and post-treatment follow-up of premalignant laryngeal lesions is discouraged.
