This study, which focuses on the fear of crime experienced in gated communities in the context of neighborhood relations, consists of two phases about literature and field research. In the first phase, the phenomenon of the fear of crime was opened to discussion and so, tried to be revealed in various dimensions. For this purpose, the fear of crime has been dealt with the framework of the right realism approach. “Environmental design” and “informal social control,” which reflect the logic of protection, prevention and control of the right realism approach associated with the fear of crime, have formed the basis of this study.
The relationship of gated communities to the fear of crime has been established over the environmental design. These relevant areas include physical design characteristics that are foreseen to prevent crime and the fear of crime. In this regard, gated communities are handled with the social ecology approach. Another factor that connects gated communities with the right realism approach pertains to informal social control. It seems possible to say that gated communities, which are one example of the design of environmental in the prevention of crime, also shape neighbor relations. The neighborship that is dealt as a part of symbolic interactionismapproach in this sense, is accepted as as a form of informal social control and has been evaluated within the dimensions that are specific to gated communities. After all, the process of the fear of crime in neighbor relations that are shaped by gated communities lifestyle have been attempted to be understood and be interpreted.
The second phase of the study is the field research in which the qualitative research method is adopted. With a semi-structured interview form, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 female and 11 male participants residing in a total of nine different gated communities in Trabzon Kasustu Neighborhood. According to the results of the study, it has been seen that the lifestyle of individuals residing in gated communities differs from the whole city in socio-spatial terms. The lifestyle that stands out in this aspect has been defined by the ideal home and the ideal family components. It has been understood that neighborhood relations are the most important complement of this lifestyle. It can be said that the informal form of neighborhood relations, which is the basis of protection and avoidance of all kinds of dangers of the city, has a stronger effect than environmental design. In this respect, it has been understood that the sites have the social and spatial characteristics of the "safe area" principle.
