Abstract

Editorial illustration presented with text as a thinking and development tool in the field of graphic design and publishing; With its power to appeal to the masses, its artistic and cultural value, it ensures the continuity of the readers as both an independent visual structure and an ideological subject. Editorial illustrations, which are a sub-genre of illustration that keeps the imagination active by attracting the attention of the reader and making him interested in the content of the text, are especially in the 19th and 20th centuries with special periodicals; It has a very important place in influencing and directing the social and cultural structure all over the world, including Turkey. For this reason, it is important to revive these artistic values in today's Turkey. Surrealistic approaches in editorial illustration, in this research, in which the Halikarnas Balıkçısı – Gülen Ada story is produced and illustrated with an editorial application, it is aimed to present a proposal regarding the active use of editorial illustration with surreal approaches and the transfer of values to the reader with visual concepts. In this context, in the first part, the role of broadcast illustration in the printed media, its emergence and historical development in the world and in Turkey are presented through the examples in the important magazines and newspapers of the period. The publication illustration model and its semiotic features are explained in the theoretical framework. Due to the developing technology and digital transformations, electronic journal publishing is mentioned in the second part. In the third part of the research, the surrealism movement, its structural knowledge and its pioneers, relationship with illustration and illustration examples using surreal elements are presented. In the fourth part of the research, the effect of the surreal movement on editorial illustrations, the exemplary works of Brad Holland, who is considered one of the pioneers of publication illustration in the field of modern graphic art; analyzed both in line with the publication illustration model and in a surrealistic language integrity.
