For young refugee women, the experience of migration as spatial displacement and the experiences and needs related to space in the post-migration process of resettlement could vary. Space is also reconstructed and regulated by gender-based relations. In this respect, space experiences and space-related needs of women and of men are different. In this study, how unmarried young women between the ages of 15-24 experience the private and public spaces in their daily life after migration was discussed. And it was aimed to make visible the relation between the interactions in the space and gender needs. For this purpose, qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 young refugee women using the feminist method. Within this scope, the findings were analyzed according to three themes. These are the following: from the encounter with the migrated public space to the construction of the private space (1), life in the public space from the perspective of the relationality between the public and private spaces (2), imaginaries of space beyond the private and public spaces from the gender perspective (3).
According to the results of the research, life experiences of young refugee women before migration process are determining in the post-migration experience of space. Firstly, the private and public spaces interact with each other in the post-migration process, the experience in the private space affects the experience of the public one. Secondly, space includes power relations, and the interactions in the space are affected by these power relations. Finally, gender-based needs are interwined with basic needs and affect the experience of both private and public spaces. In this respect, suggestions for social work practice have been presented.
