ABSTRACT
The concept of sleep was tried to be explained with religion and mythology before
scientific findings, but it still has not lost its mystery and has been the focus of attention
of artists in many different art fields for centuries. The dream, which is an integral part of
sleep, accompanied it.
The sleeper turns his face and the arrows of thought towards himself. A person who is
conscious during the day and whose condition seems awake, but who sleeps standing up,
cannot return to himself or to his dreams. While asleep, one's consciousness is not
completely closed, but there is no full consciousness either. When consciousness comes
into play clearly, the person who is in the "vigilant" state is equipped with judgments.
These judgments begin to form from childhood, in the place where he lived his first
teachings and experiences, which we call home, and then form the personality of a
person. The person whose character is formed by those teachings is no longer very aware
of himself, except that sleep forces the arrows towards himself. At this point, sleep
emerges as a sign of rebellion. Despite the moments when the person appears to be fully
awake and conscious, but experiences a kind of conscious unconsciousness; A position of
existence is born, which appears to be supposedly asleep but is a kind of waking state.
Man's existential anxiety is symbolized by the attitude he displays while sleeping, and is
not brought to light in the waking world. In this framework, the sleeping bodies in the
works produced in the process turn into themselves at the point where many judgments
end, turn away from reality and turn their faces towards their dreams.
The aim of this thesis is by painting sleeping bodies; to analyze concepts such as sleep,
dream, consciousness, subject-object. It is to describe the map of the inner world of the
individual on the axis of dreams. The concept of 'collective sleep', which was created as
an extension of Jung's collective consciousness phenomenon, will be examined. By
explaining these concepts that define one's own inner world, accompanied by research iii
from the field of art and its auxiliary fields; It is aimed to reveal another side of the
individual with concepts such as sleep and dream.
