Introduction: infections with multi-resistant gram-negative bacteria have recently become a major problem, and colistin is one of the best alternatives for patients who cannot be treated using broad-spectrum antibiotics. However, colistin has many side effects including nephrotoxicity. Colistin can be administered as long or short infusions according to its pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of mode of colistin administration on nephrotoxicity in patients in the intensive care unit. Materials and Methods: Ninety patients were included into the study. Colistin was administered through IV push (rapid infusion) to 52 patients, and through slow infusion to 38 patients. Demographic properties and acute renal failure (ARF) parameters of colistin-administered patients were recorded. Results: The characteristics of the disease and ages of the two groups were similar. ARF was less frequent in the slow colistin infusion group (p< 0.011). Conclusion: Administration of colistin in the treatment of infections with multidrug-resistant microorganisms should be performed through long infusion method to avoid the nephrotoxic side effect of colistin. Further studies are needed to support the present study.
