Abstract

ABSTRACT It is a known the fact that illustrations prepared for the texts in the books help to strengthen further narration. The origins of the book illustrations date back to the Middle Ages. Miniatures in European manuscripts in the Middle Ages both helped to explain the events in the books and were used as aesthetic elements of page designs. When the illustrations in the page designs of some Medieval European illuminated manuscripts are examined, the information that they can be accepted as the ancestor of comic book is reached. In line with the purpose that this knowledge has shown us, it reveals the necessity of searching the origins of contemporary comics in medieval illuminated manuscripts. Aafter the Middle Ages, some art movements and ideological propaganda designs were produced with reference to the pictorial aesthetics of the Middle Ages. Also, contemporary artists use some medieval images in the 21st century. In this thesis, first of all, the relationship between miniature and graphic design is explained. Aesthetic style, manuscripts and cultural structure in medieval Europe are examined. Then, the origins and production methods of comics are examined. The examples of miniatures in the illuminated manuscripts, which were made centuries ago, were transferred to digital media and produced with contemporary printing techniques. As a method, the style of miniatures in medieval European illuminated manuscripts and contemporary comic book technique were brought together to illustrate a selected work. In this way, the use of miniatures in the production of comics was aimed. For this purpose, should medieval European miniature style be used as a new form of visual expression in contemporary comics? The answer of the question was searched and the results were put forward in this thesis.
