Küçük, A. The Effect of Social Activity Program on the Autonomy and Life Engagement of Nursing Home Residents, Hacettepe University Graduate School Health Sciences Public Health Nursing Doctor of Philosophy Thesis, Ankara, 2020. This study was carried out in two stages to evaluate the effect of social activity program applied to nursing home residents on the autonomy and life engagement of the elderly. The first stage includes two methodological studies in which the Turkish Validity and Reliability of the Social Autonomy Measurement Scale and the Life Engagement Scale were conducted. The first stage was realized with 92 residents living in Emirdağ, Bolvadin and Sandıklı Hüseyin Develi Nursing Home between 01.01.2018-28.02.2018. For both Cronbach's Alpha coefficients (0,80-0,78) were above the critical value (0,70). These two scales were found to be sufficient for 60 years and over in Turkey to measure the autonomy of elderly people and life engagement. The second stage of the research is a semi-experimental research in single group pretest and posttest designs. It was completed with 36 residents staying in Afyonkarahisar Nursing Home Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Center. Between 04.06.2018-28.09.2018, 16-week social activity program (exercise, music, painting, education, religious activity and group chats) was used and the Functional and Social Autonomy Measurement Scales and Life Engagement Scale were used to evaluate the impact of the program. After the application, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference in the general scores of the three scales (p<0,005).When the subgroup scores of the Functional Autonomy Measurement Scale were evaluated, a significant difference was observed especially in the Daily Life Activity score (p<0,005). A moderate positive correlation was found between functional autonomy and social autonomy general score (p<0,005). As a result, applied social activity program is recommended in nursing homes to be used due to its positive effect on autonomy and life engagement and to be evaluated in randomized controlled studies in nursing homes of different socio-cultural structures.
