Özet
The increasing power of speed and technology by understanding nowadays
spatial configuration makes life easier; however it can ignore certain human
characteristics. While spaces can make life easier, it may interfere with the one’s
own internal orientation and communication with oneself; in this context, modern
life can be transformed into a structure that is desired to be avoided. At this point,
new places that people are looking for, offer shelters of self-return, nature, and
thinking. Within the framework of this awareness, the aim of the thesis is to
establish the relationship between thinking and space. In this context, the places
of thought were searched in the categories of eastern and western civilizations in
the dissertation. Firstly, these places were investigated by literature review,
historical analysis, and case studies. The focal point of this investigation is the
“Çilehane”, which are the thinking places of Sufism. With the examination of the
Çilehane, the concept of places of thought is explained, and its features are
presented. For this purpose, ten Çilehanes in Anatolia were examined at their
sites. With the evaluation of the findings, the existence and the reflections of
places of thought in different cultures were questioned. In this way, the basic
characteristics of the space for thinking were tried to be determined and a starting
point tried to be provided for the philosophical and spatial basis of the places of
thought.
