Abstract
This research was carried out as a descriptive and analytic study to define body image perceptions of women who had mastectomy due to breast cancer, dyadic adjustment and sexual satisfaction of these women and their husbands. Research was performed with 87 women and their husbands who met the inclusion criteria for the study, between the dates of February 5, 2015- July 8, 2015 at the four hospitals which are located in the Ankara City Metropolitan Municipality borders and have medical oncology outpatient clinic and day treatment unit. “Women Introductory Information Form”, “Husband Introductory Information Form”, “Body Cathexis Scale”, “Dyadic Adjustment Scale” and “Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction Scale-Female and Male Form”, were used as data collection tools. Mann Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test, Wilcoxon Test, Spearman Correlation Analysis and Multiple Stepwise Linear Regression Analysis were used for the statistical analysis of data. According to the study results, husbands had higher levels of dyadic adjustment and sexual satisfaction scores than the women (p<.05). Negative correlations was found between the body image perception scores of the women and the dyadic adjustment of the women (p<0.01) and husbands (p<0.05). Positive correlations was determined between the body image perception and the sexual satisfaction scores of the women and husbands (p<0.01). Both the patients’ and the husbands’ dyadic adjustment and sexual satisfaction predicted each other. In accordance with these results, routine assessment of the women having mastectomy for body image perception which causes the couples to have sexual satisfaction and dyadic adjustment problems, and to structure psychosocial care and individual, group and couple counselling interventions for those women and husbands by psychiatric nurses and other health care providers is suggested.
