Abstract

This thesis analyzesthe contributions made by Alexander Israel Helphand(Parvus Efendi)totheintellectual debatesabout the problems of economic modernization anddevelopment in Turkey in the early 20thcentury.The study mainly concentrates on his writings that he wrote in the years between 1910 and 1914 when he was staying inİstanbul. These years coincided with a critical periodin Ottoman history, known as Constitutional Period II(1908-18). Intellectual debates of the period concentrated on accumulated problems of modernization of the Ottoman Empire.
