Abstract
This thesis problematizes why there are only a few protests against the violence of police in Turkey although it’s visible on tv news nearly every day. It claims that the visual culture which makes this violence visible also legitimates it. For proving it, first of all, a thick description of the foundations of the problem was made; then the dynamics which effects the construction of the visual meaning were lightened by following the visual. It is (following the thing) also suggested as a way to grasp visual culture. A rating rekord-holder serial about criminals called Arka Sokaklar (Back Streets) was settled in the middle of the work and headlines of the analyse were determined according to the visuals of police violence and the enduring martyres of it here. Iconology, as a tecnic which provides an opportunity to research the visual intertexually was used for the analyse of the visuals. Iconology also ensures the way to understand updating process of visual memory. In connection with the symbolic analyse, the field research included two sides: production and comsumption. After interviewing with the scenarist, production manager, actors, actrists, tecnical team and the viewers of the serial in the scope of sample; it was cleared that this is the way to grasp how visual culture works and how viewing is constructed. In consequence of the work, the informants who are informed about the violence of police only by Tv, reproduct the same categories of “otherness” with the conservative discourse of Tv. Alternative viewings occur when people have public contacts with these diversities. But visual culture makes it harder by bolding the borders.
