In this study, effects of gels with varying chlorhexidine gluconate to chitosan ratios on microleakage at dental implants and bacterial growth are evaluated. Five groups were planned and each group consisted of five implants. Four different formulations were prepared for test groups. Chlorhexidine gluconate and chitosan concentrations of the formulations were; 1.5% chitosan - 1% chlorhexidine gluconate, 1.5% chitosan-2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 2% chitosan - 1% chlorhexidine gluconate and 2% chitosan- 2% chlorhexidine gluconate. Each of the gels was installed in five implants. Sterile medium was installed in implants for the control group. All implants were embedded in medium containing Staphylococcus Aureus and incubated for one week. Samples were collected from the internal part of the implants by using a paper point at the end of one week and the paper points were cultivated. Bacterial growth was evaluated according to the presence of bacterial colonies. All procedure was repeated for 4, 8, 12 weeks. According to the bacterial cultivation results, all formulations prevented bacterial growth in the internal cavity of implants along 1 and 4 weeks. Antibacterial effect of formulation containing 1% chlorhexidine gluconate-1, 5% chitosan diminished after 4 weeks while other formulations protected their antibacterial effect for 12 weeks. Gels containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate showed stronger antibacterial activity than gels containing 1% chlorhexidine gluconate. At the end of this in vitro study, it was shown that a bacteria free environment can be obtained in the internal cavity of the implants by using gels containing 2 % chlorhexidine gluconate for early period of healing when rapid peri-implant bone resorption occurs.
