Abstract

In this study, jazz chord progressions have been examined from a historical perspective; and the changes in jazz chord progressions which are in between early jazz and free jazz have been covered. Chord progressions, which previously have been used for harmonic ground of improvisation, have had rapid changes and had different meanings along with time. With this study, It is observed that in pre-bebop jazz styles, improvisation was made by using chord progressions of the popular songs; during bebop era, new methods were developed in order to enrich the chord progressions and these methodologies were also used during post bebop styles and chord changes have had entirely a different extent in free jazz.
