Abstract

In this study, valency and the structures that have valency potential in Turkish have been studied theoretically in the frame of Dependency Grammar and Universal Grammar. The present study aims to prove that valency notion which has been studied morphologically in Turkish is in fact a morphosyntactic phenomenon. Besides, some notions such as valency change and valency alternation has been discussed from the viewpoint of both semantical and morphological processes. The categories which increase and decrease the valency in Turkish have been determined with reference to this consideration and the reasons of valency alternations have been analyzed. Valency is a category that has a influence on all of the syntax. In this regard, not only valeny but also the categories such as case, voice, transitivity-intransitivity, collocation, aspect, semantics, grammaticalization and modality which have direct relevance with valency have been examined in this study. Valency is not a feature proper to verbs, nouns, adjective, primary postposition. Some structures formed with verb in Turkish maintain their valency potential. The phrases formed by these structures have a government and actant pattern diagram. In this study, the valency of these structures have been discussed within the phrase structure. The valency is also handled in terms of its relevance with Applied Linguistics. In the last chapter, valency’s relation with language typology and language universals have been asserted.
