Italian composer Nino Rota is one of the well-known composers of the 20th century, in
recognition of reflecting his unique style on movie soundtracks and compositions. It is seen
that the composer has gained worldwide attraction and acclaim with his movie soundtracks
and also has a very wide repertoire. His simple and influential melodies draw the attention
an his works.
Rota’s ‘Divertimento Concerto’ is composed between the years of 1967 and 1971, is
considered one of the important works of the double bass repertoire with its technical
difficulties and impressive musical structure. Rota composed this piece inspired by Franco
Petracchi, and dedicated it to him. Today, performing this piece in exams and competitions
frequently by the double bass players allows to show all their mastery and skills.
In this study, it is aimed to examine Rota’s musical history, compositions, and musical
style by giving detailed information about his work, ‘Divertimento Concerto’ in terms of
form and musical structure. In the light of the findings obtained as a result of the review; it
is aimed to explain the contribution of the work to the double bass repertoire.
