In history, the border of the Northwestern Black Sea Region has changed between Pontos,
Bithynia, and Paphlagonia many times. This region, which besides transmits the settlements
areas in the south to the black sea in the north, provides the transportation between Central
Black Sea and Istanbul (Konukçu, 1988: 213).
In the early Byzantine period, the region was divided as Honorius (west part) and Paphlagonia
(east part). Paphlagonia in the east of Honarias was bordered with Galatia in the south, Pontus
in the east, Black Sea in the north. The theme of Paphlagonia includes some parts of
Kastamonu, Sinop, Çankırı and Karabük (all), Çorum, Bolu and Zonguldak (Cramer, 1832: 216-
241). The northwestern Black Sea road network with east-west extension connects Honorias and
Paphlagonia to each other and in other settlements during the Early Byzantine period (French,
2012: 18-20, Map. 5.1-5.1.1, Drakoulis, 2012: 90).
In the Northwest Black Sea; Zonguldak, Alaplı Göktepe (Kilisecik) Church (AGKMK), Kdz.
Ereğli Orhan Gazi Mosque (OGC), Rock Carved Structures in Kdz. Ereğli Akheron Valley
