Esin FAKIBABA DEDEOĞLU. An Analyses on Public Space in “Citta Slow” in the context of Life Quality, Proficiency in Art, Ankara, 2018
A great number of projects have been developed in order to disclose differences in a world where everything is the same. Slow City movement regarded as one of these projects for nature and human, was developed by the mayors of Greve, Orvieto, Bra and Positano, pioneering Slow Food Movement in the province of Orvieto, İtaly in 1999. Each of the 72 criteria set by the organization aims to boost quality of life. Space quality which contributes to improving quality of life, constitutes the standpoint of the thesis.
İn the first part of the study, the target, scope and methodology of the thesis has been clarified by explaining the process that requires the study to be done.
In the second part, since the study’s roadmap, the notion of slow city is a sustainable city movement, the terms of “Urbanization”, “Identity”, “City Identity”, “Sustainable Cities” and “Urban Space” have been defined under the title of “Sustainable City”. In addition, the fact that the organization is defined as a cultural movement necessities the social-cultural aspects of the concept of sustainability to be dealt with. In the study the concepts of “philosophy of slowness” and “slow food” have been clarified and the details and the criteria of slow city have been discussed. This part has been completed by examining the concept of public spaces in slow cities.
In the third part, starting from the parameters of slow city, which has been explained in the second part, the notion of quality of life, “quality and parameters of urban life”, “public space”, “public area”, and “social cultural

aspect of public places has been defined and clarified in order to reveal the core relation between public space and quality of life in cities. The quality and parameters of public space have been detailed and quality parameters to be evaluated within the scope of the field study have been determined.
In the fourth part of the study, general information has been provided about slow city in which the field studies have been carried out and data analysis of questionnaires conducted in areas determined in terms of field studies have been made. Both hypothesis and significance level have been tested by analyzing specific regression by means of SPSS 21.0.
In the conclusion part, the core relation between the data obtained at the end of the conducted field studies and the hypothesis determined before the study has been evaluated. Significant finding has been obtained at the end of the surveys carried out on city-dwellers and visitors and the study especially made in Halfeti, which is ninth slow city in our country. It has been concluded that there are several shortcomings in terms of rising quality of space, and therefore, quality of life and some evaluations have been made in this sense.
