İLTER, Berceste. Perceived Social Support of High School Students Who Use Cigarette and Alcohol: Gerede Sample, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2018.
This study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of social support perception of high school students on their attitudes towards cigarette and alcohol substances.
146 students between ages 14-19 and who are having education in Esentepe Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School (Formerly, Hotel Management and Tourism Profession Anatolian High School) in Gerede county in Bolu, constituate the population of the study.
Data collection was completed between the dates of 10th of April-1st of June 2015. Data was collected by Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and a question form developed by researcher.
While youths perceived social support levels they perceive from a friend, family, a special person and total in terms of their age and other socio-demographic features were tried to be determined by the use of MSPSS, their attitude and behaviors towards cigarette and alcohol were tried to be found out by a question form developed by researcher.
It has been learned that nearly half of the attenders are using cigarette and alcohol substances. By the way, cigarette usage results have been reached to be superior to alcohol usage. Study group has family integrity in general and education level of their parents is low. While financial responsibility commonly belongs to fathers, there are youths whose mothers also work. Group-wide has an average and/or lower financial income.
Social support average perceived from family, friend and a special person of youths who attend to the study are seen to be close to the top therefore, those findings aren’t found to be meaningful in terms of youths cigarette- alcohol usage. While imitating a friend and then curiosity has been effective in starting smoking, the findings curiosity and then imitating family has been reached to be more effective in starting alcohol.
Apart from all those and similar findings, youths’ parents’ education levels and whether they are using cigarette-alcohol, how pleased they are with the school they are in, their attendance-absence rates to school, quality of their relationship with their teachers, to what extent they are related to art, sports and social activities and their effects on the attitude towards substance have been determined.
