This study investigates the use of the suggested "Social Network Analysis (SNA)" method in studies about the period of Suleiman the Magnificent. "Hurrem Sultan" was chosen as the SNA subject to be addressed through bibliographies and citations, due to the personal curiosity about Hurrem Sultan, as a historical character and figure, in addition to having good command of the literature about the subject. Using a different method, the "Social Network Analysis", this study seeks answers to questions about where to start, which books and articles should be used in an academic study about Hurrem Sultan; which historians and writers work on the subject today; how and by whom the views about Hurrem Sultan were formed; which work, which author has been the main source for the other and influential for the subsequent research; and where the foreign authors are placed in this influential relationships network.
With the extraordinary perspective provided by the network science, a unique and comprehensive bibliography was created about "Hurrem Sultan". To create and map the social network of historians, authors and researchers who work on the subject through citations; to identify the influential names and authorities that come to the forefront on the subject; to address the subject within the perspective of network science, which has a totally different perspective, instead of investigating it with the traditional methods are the main objectives of the study.
The "Social Network" subject-matter and the method of "Social Network Analysis" have not been preferred by the thesis authors in the field of history to date. Although there are various studies conducted using social network analysis, there are only few studies on History and Ottoman History in particular. The study to be conducted aims to fill this gap between the two areas.
The first three parts of the study discusses the graph theory, and the short history and basic concepts of social network analysis in conjunction with this theory. The citation indexes and the connection of citation networks with social network analysis were also addressed. In the final part, the analysis, which is the main objective of the study, was carried out using Kaynakça.info, which enables analysis of the bibliographic data through the social network analysis. The study concludes with the impressions and suggestions about the various studies that can be carried out with the SNA method especially in the field of history both with and without Kaynakça.info as well as making recommendations on how to improve the extent of application of the method.
