Concepts such as light, shadow and darkness have been the subject of different relationships since prehistoric times. We, who are accustomed to the existence of light today, can look back a little and guess what past primitive societies could do for light. You cannot see where the assertion of light as a representation, the contrasting placement of its continuation, comes from in the essence of what situations.
Light and darkness, which are frequently mentioned in products such as mythology, philosophy, psychology and art, sometimes indicate a divine representation and sometimes have an important place in terms of the representation of the human world. Of course, before this happens, we see in the details of the cave that there are two light sources that humans can benefit from the most. One of them is solar and the other is present. Later, people who found the depletion of the accidental work added a third loss of light and heat to their lives. The prosperity created by lightning created the fears of ancient people. Thus, on the one hand, light signified good, and on the other hand, it was associated with evil and fear.
Information about different subjects and concepts such as light and shadow are sometimes associated with divine and sometimes with worldly things. In addition, the act of seeing itself has a significant effect on the light and its appearance. After being exposed to darkness for a long time, doesn't a person suddenly become blind for a while? He cannot look at the light, he turns it in the dark point of time and waits to get used to it. This situation is also the same in the physical sense; Plato explains his own metaphor with this situation. Apart from the physical formation of light and its ongoing adventure, the use of light and shadow in works seen in art history will be examined from different perspectives in this thesis. After starting with the physical formation of light, concepts such as darkness, shadow and explanations will be discussed and their reflections in art will be examined.
