Yurdakul, A.V., The Relationship Between Oxidative Stress Markers, in Blood and Arteries, and Antioxidant Capacity of The Diet in Individuals Undergoing Coronary Bypass. Hacettepe University Graduate School of Health Sciences, Program of Nutrition and Dietetics, Doctor of Philosophy Thesis, Ankara, 2023. Endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation play an essential role in atherosclerosis. HDL cholesterol level protects against atherosclerosis but could be oxidized in some pathological conditions; furthermore, the CD36 level may increase. Dietary total antioxidant capacity is associated with cardiovascular diseases. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the relationship between total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oxidant stress markers (oxHDL and CD36) in plasma and the arteries and the total antioxidant capacity from the diet (DTAC) in patients planned for coronary bypass operation. For this purpose, a total of 66 patients, 13 of them women between the age of 19-65 years, were included. The demographic variables and nutritional habits of the individuals were questioned. Anthropometric measurements were measured, the food frequency questionnaire for the last six months was questioned, and DTAC was calculated. The plasma and arteries tissue samples were analyzed by ELISA to determine the levels of TAC, ox-HDL and CD36. The mean age of the individuals was 59.50±7.94 years, 47.0% of them have type 2DM, and 28.8% have never smoked. The individuals DTAC was found, 53777.59±19477.36 μmol TE for the H-ORAC, 1745.27±775.39 μmol TE for the L-ORAC,55847.15±19882 for the T-ORAC and 16,86±8,99 mmoL TE for the FRAP-C database. Plasma TAC concentrations (19.62±3.11 nmol/mL) of smokers without DM were significantly high compared to non-smokers (18.62±2.77 nmol/mL) (p<0.05). Plasma CD36 values in the second and third tertiles of the L-ORAC database (3.93±0.19 ng/mL and 4.37±0.73 ng/mL, respectively) and plasma ox-HDL values (215.08±143.66 ng/mL and 179.61±73.46 ng/mL, respectively) in the second and third tertiles of the FRAP-C database were found statistically significant (p<0.05). There was a negative weak (r=-0,27) corrrelation between arterial TAC and dietary monounsaturated fatty acid and insoluble fibre intake (p<0.05). There was a strong positive correlation between plasma glucose level and plasma CD36 level (r=0,31) , a weak positive correlation between HDL cholesterol and plasma ox-HDL levels (r=0,25) and also a weak positive correlation was found between plasma triglyceride and arterial ox-HDL levels (r=0,26) (p<0.05). Since this is the first study to evaluate plasma and arterial ox-HDL, TAC and CD36, the results of this study may provide a better understanding of the relationship between the dietary antioxidant capacity and ox-HDL, TAC and CD36.
