Abstract
Functionally graded materials (FGM) are multifunctional composite materials whose mechanical properties vary smoothly and continuously from one side to the other. Due this continuous change in composition of the constituent materials, FGMs are promising candidates for future intelligent composites.This thesis is aimed to find a general approach about the vibrational behavior of functionally graded cylindrical shells. In order to do that, a FGM shell made of stainless steel and zirconia is subjected to various analyses using finite element method (ANSYS) and its dynamic behavior is obtained consequently. For a better evaluation of its vibrational behavior, FGM shell has undergone various modal analyses, with different boundary conditions, geometrical properties and a volume fraction ratio. The acquired results are compared with the data available in the resources and verified ultimately. Also, a crack is added to the FGM shell and its effect on the vibrational characteristics is analyzed.
