Doğu ve Batı Resim Sanatında Zamanın Simgelenmesi
Abstract
As a multi-faceted phenomenon, time is closely related to culture, society, and religion. Linked to crucial dichotomies between faith and reason, the spiritual and the materialistic, the objective and the subjective, the active and the passive, time gains importance on both theoretical and empirical levels. The space-oriented art of painting is opposed to time-oriented verbal arts. Therefore, temporality of painting is investigated in intermedial connection with verbal arts. A wide perspective on representation of time is achieved due to the comparative examination of time in traditional pictorial arts of the East and of the West. Natural infinity and prevalence of cyclical temporal model in traditional Eastern culture is opposed to historical, logical, and hierarchical approach to time in the West. These diverse temporal patterns, mirroring each other, create two conceptual frameworks.
