Kitapçı Arakel'in Yayın Katalogları
Abstract
Political and cultural changes which occured in The Ottoman Empire during the 19th century have made bookselling industry become more modern and professional as well. In this century, Western-style bookshops were opened one after another in İstanbul Babıali Street. One of these first shops is bookseller Arakel Tozluyan Efendi’s shop. The sales strategy named Esami-i Kütüb which was developed by bookseller Arakel had the aim of increasing profit margin and conveyin more quality books to more readers. The first of these catalogs which also served a function in some kind of bibliography was formed by him. After that other booksellers which had shops in Babıali chose to form and distribute catalogs as he did. This study of thesis aims to examine Arakel’s publishing catalogs which carry weight with showing the perception of literature of the period. The study also intends to analyze the historical value of these catalogs.
