In conscious states, one has a more controlling and introverted mechanism, because of the social norms, morals, beliefs and fears that people have. Having these concerns consciously turns us away from freedom and transforms us into a different individuals. Sometimes we willingly hide our immorality, our sexuality and our belief. Sometimes we unwittingly push some things that have happened to us into our subconscious and hide them behind closed doors, which brings traumas and depressions with it.
Sigmund Freud is a pioneer with his psychoanalytic work on this subject. Freud aimed to reveal the unconscious and helped people to find what they pushed behind closed doors, in a sense, to see themselves, to become free. These experiences of Freud were a source of inspiration and revolution not only for the medical world but also for the art world. The Surrealism movement founded by André Breton, born between the first and second world wars, embraced Freud's ideas and invited the unconscious world to art. Surrealists act completely under the direction of the unconscious, away from aesthetic and moral concerns, not being under the pressure of the mind. Pure resources that are hidden in the unconscious are of great importance. Surrealist art does not have a specific material limit, because artists do it the way they come from within and with different materials. This material can be oil paint or photographs. Although photography has been used as a material since the birth of surrealism, today surrealist photographs have moved into a different dimension with the development of technology. Describing the fantasy world has now become much easier and more realistic. Today, surreal photo manipulations find their existence in the art world. From my point of view, I wanted to do my thesis research in this direction because I find it very intiresting. In my digital works, I produce works based on the depths of my inner world. Sometimes I produce my works with the anxieties hidden within me, sometimes with reference to a world that does not exist in reality, which is pushed by my dreams. Although every work of mine has a story, it can turn into a closed box for the audience as these stories come from my inner world. Therefore, my intention in this thesis is to show the scientific discovery of the unconscious world with examples, to examine its adaptation in art within its historical process and artists, with the sample works of these artists and to explain how I produce my works.
