Abstract

One cannot deny the influence of the interactions between the artwork and space on the ceramic art. The reason behind the ever growing importance of ceramic art as a means of artistic expression along with its functionality is due to the modernization effort. As a result of all these interactions, ceramic constitutes a significant material for the figurative sculpture formation which has become a trend within the art at the present time. Being present at every period of art, figurative forms are among the most significant components. Those forms being produced for various purposes since the early ages have moved to a different position today. With the transforming effect of the modern art, these forms have reached a position where they are now an object of art. 1960s have seen simultaneous and successive art movements in plastic arts. This study explores the relationship between space and art object at those times. It investigates the integrity of the art object with space within the context of the interrelation between space and the art object. In the 20th century, the relationship between space and the artwork has begun to be investigated and the artwork has become integrated with its environment. In this context, the traditional “observer” understanding has left its place to the observer model in which individuals themselves experience and become a part of the artwork. In this thesis, the relationship between the art object and space is presented with the examples of figurative sculpture. In the first section of the study, the object, the art object and the style and the content are explained and the concept of space is explored along with the development of art and its evolution throughout the history. In the second section of the study, the possible relations of applications and forms with object and space, and the artists handling the art are exemplified.
