Everyday life is comprised of all moments building up the life of the individual such as spare time, family life and private life as well as the aggregate of actions such as eating and drinking, sleeping and shopping along with social relations with which these actions and moments are involved. Objectivity of everyday life in its entirety determines the actual individual. Subjects treated in this study cover everyday life and individuals it determines, forms of relations with life established (or not established) by the individual, the ways these relations are linked with space and their reflections on art. Actions involved with everyday life occur in a social space and time. Consequently space is defined as the objectivity which leads to alienation of individuals.
Among the topics treated in the paintings considered in this study are the system and the individual, consciousness of the individual in the system, space created by the system and the relations between them. The concept of alienation in artistic work is approached with the premise that it is the sentiment emerging as a consequence of the individual’s inability to become connected with everyday life. Transformation of the concept, alienation, through the legacies of philosophers Hegel, Feuerbach, Fromm, Marx and Lefebvre is treated in a historical perspective. Isolation of people within the society and alienation emerging as its outcome are explained in a conceptual way by emphasizing their relations with everyday life and a holistic account of these concepts is pursued.
Fundamental approach adopted in the artistic work throughout the thesis is considering space as an entity produced as a social construct. Hegemony over the space-time-money triad becoming the hallmark of social power has altered the approaches to space throughout history. In this research space is philosophically treated in line with the approaches of thinkers like Aristotle, Descartes, Kant and Heidegger. Concepts of urbanization, urban spaces and common space are treated as a contemporary debate along the lines of Harvey, Lefebvre and Stavrides.
Works within the thesis are produced by exploiting autobiographic features coinciding with impressions from everyday life.
