Kocamaz, D. Effect of calısthenıcs exercıse on functıonal capacıty, cognitive
status and qualıty of lıfe ın women wıth breast cancer. Hacettepe University.
Graduate School of Health Science, Doctorate Thesis in Physical Therapy and
Rehabilitation Programme, Ankara, 2017. The aim of this study is to investigate
the effects of applied calisthenics exercise on functional capacity, cognitive function
and quailty of life during chemotherapy in wowen with breast cancer and contribute
to rehabilitatiton programmes. 46 wowen between 18-65 years was included this
sudy during chemotherapy. They were part of two groups; calisthenic exercise and
home exercise groups and their demographic features, physical functions, fatigue
level, fuctional capacity, cognitive functions, quality of life and cancer marker levels
were evaluated. Assesments were done before treatment, 2. month, 3. month and 6.
month. In calisthenic exercise group twice a week calisthenic exercises and one a
week walking on submaximal level applied. In home exercise group, three times a
week walking on submaximal speed applied. Exercise programme was planned 12
weeks. The result of study, functional capacity, cognitive status and quality of life
significantly higher in calisthenic exercise group during chemotherapy (p<0,05). The
decrease in fatigue level and evelation of serum level of cancer marker more
pronounced in calisthenic exercise group (p<0.05). The result of evaluations showed
that, on 2. month all functions decreased, end of 3. month, there was an increase
compared to pre-treatment period results in women. Consequently, calisthenic
exercise is an effective method for reduction of treatment side effect and protect and
increase of physical, functional and coginitive functions in women with breast cancer.
In addition, calisthenic exercises may be preferred for reducing serum levels of cancer
markers during chemotherapy. The results of the exercise programs that were
administered during chemotherapy in our study will contribute to rehabilitation and
lead to physiotherapists working in this area.
