Abstract
The plants of concentrated solar power (CSP) that is used to generate electricity from the solar energy are the electricity generation systems using solar energy as a primary energy source. While all type of CSP plants works basically the same way, solar energy collection methods differ in terms of collectors used. In the Central Receiver Systems (CRS) also known as the “tower solar plants”, sun's rays are reflected with the help of planar mirrors (heliostats) to the receiver that is heat exchanger. Electricity is obtained by the conventional means with the working fluid heated in the receiver. CRS plant elements and design, evaluations, calculations and analyses introduced in this study will provide an information infrastructure for the future CRS plants that will be built by the private sector or the government in the context of supporting the active contribution of solar thermal energy to the electricity production compatible with the renewable energy vision of Turkey. For this purpose the efficiency and the annual amount of electrical energy that can be produced by a 10 MW capacity CRS power plant in Birecik/URFA (her average annual direct normal irradiation (DNI) value between 1991-2011 is 1994 kWh/m² according to the sun measurements on the site and the data of German Aerospace Center) one of the cities of the highest radiation value on the Turkey's annual global horizontal irradiance map, have been calculated. Thus technical performance results of a CRS power plant that will be built in Birecik have been obtained. In the calculations, data of meteorology company Meteonorm for Birecik has been loaded to SAM (System Advisor Model) that is a software of United States Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) providing technical performance and financial modeling services in the field of renewable energy and thus technical performance values of the plant have been obtained. Different performance results obtained by variables such as alternative dimensions of heliostats on the site, diameters of central receiver that will be assembled to the tower have been compared. Design details for optimum plant values in Birecik’s conditions have been reached. It has been seen in calculations that Birecik has a significant solar energy potential and resulted that 25.417 MWh electricity can be generated by a 10 MW CRS solar thermal power plant there. The values obtained with the SAM software have been compared to the results obtained by mathematically thermodynamic cycle calculations and also by the EBSILON software of German STEAG Company and thus the results have been verified. In the performance calculations, the heat storage alternative is excluded, but the comparison between the amount of annual energy generation of the storage plants and the generation amount of the non-storage Birecik plant is compared in the Conclusion part. Annual energy production values, capacity factors and LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) values have been calculated for 10 MW capacity CRS plants to be installed in Urfa, Ankara, Konya, Mersin, Muğla and Van cities as well as Birecik city with the same technical properties of Birecik’s CRS plant plant.
