Modern Aile Tarihinde Fotoğraf ve Anlatı İzinde: Ailedeki Ulus ve Evlatlıkları
Özet
In this study, photo album of a family dating from the end of 1800s to the 1950s is being analysed. The relationship of family photos with what is ideological is being inquired in the analysis. In other words, the traces of social changes roughly between the last quarter of Ottoman Period and the first quarter of Republic, are quested with a focus on family.
While constructing our memory, photographs carry the traces of events and facts that are completely externalized from the memory. If the image of family vision of the modernization and nation-state processes in the photographs are evaluated together with narratives, the ruptures that arise provide possibilities of thinking on what is ideological. Family photographs which merge with the narratives, conduce to remembrance of the nation’s manifestation and forgotten foster children in the family. This study also presents a method of using photographs as a tool for understanding a social reality by going beyond the subjective relationship with family photographs.
This study contains four chapters; initially, a theoretical and historical discussion of modern family is carried out; then, knowledge on the method of analysing photographs is put forth. Third chapter is spared to the analysis of photographs with a recourse to the themes specified as photograph and narrative on the basis of memory. In this context, the appearance of nation in the family and its foster children who are in fact, disjointed from the familial link has been reached. The study ends with an evaluation of the data and presentation of suggestions for further studies that will focus on photographs.
