Özet
With digital communication technologies, all kinds of information are expressed in numbers. Technologies such as computers, the internet, and smartphones play a big part in the daily life of individuals. While these technologies provide convenience to individuals in many areas like rapid access to information, doing daily work online, interacting with the events going on around, they have led to the determination of new ethical issues. Digital communication technologies have transformed journalism. In this context, the structure of the news and the appearance of newsrooms are changed. However, new ethical principles are needed.
With the emergence of internet journalism and the widespread use of new media environments, new types of news have emerged. Data journalism emerges as a type of news whose popularity is increasing in the journalism environment transformed by digital communication technologies. This research aims to reveal ethical problems in data journalism on the axis of the transformation of journalism. In the thesis studies conducted so far, no research has been found that addresses the issue of ethics in data journalism. This research will make a contribution to the field in this context. The main question of the thesis study is “What are the ethical issues in data journalism?” is the question. The main problematic of the research is "What are the issues that cause ethical problems in data journalism?". In this context, in-depth interviews were conducted with data journalists, academics, and journalists are working in news portals.
According to the research, data journalists have problems accessing open data in Turkey. For this reason, they benefit from the data of non-governmental organizations rather than official sources as news sources. In the research, it was concluded that ethical issues occur in data journalism, such as some areas: Revealing the context, user privacy, including the methodology used in the news, and data visualization.
