Although core stabilization training is known to improve athletic performance in athletes, its effects on anaerobic performance are not completely known yet. Therefore, effects of progressive core stabilization training (PCST) on anaerobic capacity, anaerobic power, and fatigue in elite athletes was investigated in current study. Elite athletes (taekwondo, weightlifting, volleyball, badminton) were randomly divided into study (SG) (n=30, 21.70±2.71 years) and control (CG) (n=28, 21.71±2.49 years) groups. The PCST (30-40 minutes/session, 3 days/9 week) was applied to SG under supervision of a physiotherapist. Standard (routine) core strengthening training (3 days/9 week) was given to CG as an exercise prescription. To measure anaerobic capacity, anaerobic power, and fatigue index, 30-second Wingate Anaerobic Power test as a laboratory test and jump tests as a field test were used in all athletes. Demographic characteristics of groups were similar (p>0.05). In SG, maximum anaerobic power, maximum anaerobic capacity, anaerobic power between 0-5 seconds, anaerobic capacity between 0-30 seconds, anaerobic power values at the 5th, 10th and 15th seconds and vertical active jump value more increased statistically significantly than CG (p<0.05). Anaerobic power values at the 20th and 25th seconds in CG increased statistically significantly compared to SG (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in minimum anaerobic power, 30th second anaerobic power, fatigue index and vertical squat jump values between groups (p>0.05). The PCST further increases anaerobic performance in elite athletes compared to standard core strengthening training. However, both exercise training has no effect on fatigue index of elite athletes. The PCST should be included in training program of athletes in sports branches where anaerobic performance usage are at the forefront.
