Abstract
This is a cross-sectional study comparing adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and adolescents who attempted suicide and adolescents without any psychiatric disorder, regarding depressive symptoms, negative life events (NLEs), emotion regulation (ER), mindfulness and sensory processing sensitivity (SPS). This study also investigates the association between these factors and the severity of suicide intent in adolescents who attempted suicide and the mediator and moderator roles of these factors in the relation of NLEs and depressive symptoms. One hundred and twenty five adolescents between the ages 12-18 were enrolled in the study, 47 in MDD group, 40 in suicide attempt group and 38 in healthy control group. Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children- Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) was used to confirm MDD diagnosis and suicide attempt and to exclude any psychiatric disease in healthy control group.Sociodemographic and Clinical Information Questionnaire, Negative Life Events Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Adolescentand Adult Mindfulness Scale (AAMS), The Regulation of Emotions Questionnaire (REQ)and The Highly Sensitive Child Scale-Mother Report were used to evaluate all adolescents and those in the suicide attempt group were also interviewed to fill Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). As a result, it was shown that adolescents with MDD experienced higher number of NLEs, have lower levels of mindfulness, use internal dysfunctional and external dysfunctional ER strategies more and external functional ER strategies less compared to healthy controls. When the whole sample was evaluated, the relation between the number of NLEs and depressive symptoms were mediated by mindfulness, self acceptance, external functional, external dysfunctional and internal dysfunctional ER strategies. Adolescents who had a suicide attempt had higher number of NLEs, lower levels of mindfulness and self acceptance and used internal dysfunctional and external dysfunctional ER strategies more compared to healthy controls. Severity of suicide intent in those adolescents was only correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms. There was no difference regarding sensory processing sensitivity between groups.
