Comparison of Control System Design Methods for a Bank-to-Turn Missile

In a bank-to-turn flight, cross-coupling dynamics are excited even more, compared to a skid-to-turn flight and these dynamics violate some of the assumptions that are made during the linearization of the system model. In addition to that, due to its coupled nature, considering the dynamics of the system as separated from each other decreases the performance of the linear control methods. Thus, the control system design process must be developed with the consideration of solving this problem. In this study, two different design methods are compared and analysed to obtain a convenient solution. To be able to do that, two different options, which are chosen by mostly considering their disturbance rejection capabilites, are prepared. After that, both autopilot structures are tested in a nonlinear high-fidelity 6-DOF simulation to observe their flight performances in a bankto-turn flight and examine their strengths and weaknesses relative to each other.
